Basics of Communication for Behavioral Impact
What is COMBI?
|
Communication for Behavioral Impact, COMBI, is a 10-step communication planning method directed at designing effective behavioral communication programs for achieving specific behavioral outcomes in health and social development. It focuses sharply on getting behavioural results and not just increasing awareness or informing and educating people. It bridges the gap between Knowing what to do and the Doing, recognizing that it is one thing to Know, another to Do. Communication for Knowing is quite different from Communication for Doing.
COMBI blends multiple communication techniques from both the private and public sector with careful formative/market/field research and behavioral insights for precise behavioral results. The videos and documents below introduce individuals to some of the basics of Communication for Behavioral Impact and the application of COMBI. A core COMBI planning principle: "Do nothing - produce no T-shirts, no posters, no pamphlets, no radio-tv spots, etc... until one knows precisely and sharply the behavioral outcome(s) desired...and one has gone out in the field to listen to people...."
Here is an old 4-page brochure on COMBI prepared by the WHO Mediterranean Center in Tunis. Despite its age, the overall description of the COMBI method remains valid.
A draft COMBI Manual covering each of the 10-steps in COMBI planning is now in trial form with the World Health Organisation/Non Communicable Diseases Section. See attached file below. Please note that it is not yet an official publication of WHO.
